2025 CAVB Men's Championships: GSU thrive as Kenya Prisons and KPA Struggle

GSU remain unbeaten at the 2025 CAVB Men’s Volleyball Club Championships, while fellow Kenyan sides Kenya Prisons and Kenya Ports Authority face early setbacks in group-stage action in Libya.
GSU continue to build on their strong start to the 2025 CAVB Men's Volleyball Club Championships after edging out Morocco's FUS Rabat 3-2 (18-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14), registering their third win of the tournament.
The 23-team competition, currently taking place in Libya, began on Saturday. GSU is one of three Kenyan teams participating in this 46th edition, alongside Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Prisons.
GSU are among the tournament’s standout performers so far, having won all three of their matches in Group B, which includes 16-time champions Al Ahly (Egypt), Club Castel (Algeria), Genie Republic (DR Congo), FUS Rabat (Morocco), and Nemo Stars (Uganda).

GSU, whose best-ever finish at the competition is third place—achieved this year—opened their campaign with a walkover win (3-0: 25-0, 25-0, 25-0) against Genie Republic.
They then followed it up with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22) victory over Club Castel on Monday, before battling past FUS Rabat in a thrilling five-setter on Tuesday evening.
GSU are now second in the group with nine points, having won nine sets and lost only three. Al Ahly top the group, also with nine points, but lead due to winning all their matches in straight sets.
While GSU have impressed, Kenya’s other representatives have struggled to find form.
In Group C, Kenya Prisons lie fourth with four points, having won one match and lost two. They have won five sets and lost seven across those matches. The trio of El Etihad (Libya), Kepler (Rwanda), and PAD (Cameroon) lead the group with six points each. Orange Club (Mauritius) follow Prisons in fifth with two points, while Wolaitta (Ethiopia) remain winless at the bottom.
Prisons, historically Kenya’s best performers at the tournament, began their campaign with a 3-0 (20-25, 30-32, 21-25) loss to PAD on Sunday. They bounced back on day two, defeating Wolaitta 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 27-29, 25-18), but narrowly lost 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 11-15) to Orange Club on Monday despite taking the first two sets.
Kenya Ports Authority, competing in Group D, have recorded similar results, alternating between wins and losses.
KPA are grouped with ES Tunis (Tunisia), APR (Rwanda), Al Nasr (Libya), Litto (Cameroon), and Emmanuel (DR Congo).
KPA started with a narrow 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19, 17-19) loss to APR on Sunday, bounced back with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-10) win over Al Nasr on Monday, but were outplayed on Tuesday, losing in straight sets (17-25, 12-25, 19-25) to ES Tunis.
They currently sit fourth in the group with four points, one behind Al Nasr and APR (five points each). ES Tunis top the group with nine points, having won all three matches in straight sets.
The competition resumes on Wednesday, with GSU aiming to extend their unbeaten run against Uganda’s Nemo Stars.
Meanwhile, Kenya Prisons and KPA will be seeking redemption as they take on Kepler and Emmanuel respectively.
The top four teams from each group will qualify for the Round of 16.
